After our Saturday morning rendezvous with Guy and Alysia Starbuck and Mohave Blake at the giant thermometer in Baker, our little crew heads north toward Death Valley. Not too far up the road we make a stop near Silver Lake to check out the old CAP airfield. This photo shows some footings for the beacon or tower. Mohave tells us that in the late 1920's a series of intermediary emergency landing fields were established for commercial aircraft flying between major cities. This field may have originally been established at that time.
