The dead quail just inside the entrance doesn't add to any sense of security!

Update: Actually, thanks to John from Hesperia, we now know that this is not a quail but rather a red shafted flicker. This is a type of woodpecker that has a wide range including the California desert. It feeds mostly on ants, but also incorporates other insects as well as berries and seeds into its diet.
