The rain beetle larvae spend about ten years before they morph into adults. This usually happens when there's adequate moisture to bring the flightless females out of their burrows and get the males airborne so they can mate. The adult rain beetles have no mouth parts or digestive systems. They must mate soon or die before passing along the gift of life to a new generation.
