Thanks to Larry B., we now know that this is a caster mounting socket.  It would have been hammered into a drilled hole in the bottom of an office chair leg and then a caster with a long shank would have been slid into it.  Now those old miners could roll around the cabin in style!  Its design, as you can see in the next photo, was patented quite a long time ago!
