Niki is holding a cupule. These are made of bone ash and can be used only once in the assay process. Remember that button of gold and silver and litharge that resulted from heating the ore and fluxes in the crucible? Well, that button is placed in the bone ash cupule and heated. The bone ash soaks up the litharge and leaves, hopefully, a tiny dot of gold and silver. This small dot is then removed and weighed to ascertain the value of the ore sample.
