The lakes
in the high country were just thawing as we joined Niki's family
for a four day backpacking trip into the Ansel Adams Wilderness near
Mammoth. We had beautiful weather as we shouldered our packs,
complete with bear canisters, for our hike from Agnew Meadows toward
the snowbound Thousand Island Lake area. We would set up our
base camp in the valley below Garnet Lake and day hike up into the
high country. We all vowed that next time we'd carry less stuff! However,
