Numerous benchmarks parallel this historic road.  In the early 1900's Charles Bennett's borax laden 20 mule teams plied this route from Saratoga Springs up the long alluvial fan to Owl Hole Spring and then through what is now Fort Irwin  to Granite Springs and on to Mojave and the railroad.
