Just a few feet in front of the "Red Lady" pictograph is the ceremonial bedrock mortar surrounded by smaller cupules. The observing archaeologist reported that, "One half hour before noon a small arrow shaped spot of light suddenly appeared, pointing to the bedrock mortar." This spot of light is formed by a narrow opening in the top of the two boulders which lean together and form the shelter. He then goes on to say that close to noon, "The pointer grew in size, quickly moved toward the lone hole and then made a 'nose dive' into it." It was also noted that on the day before the spring solstice and the day following it, the pointer missed the bedrock mortar completely. So, the symbolism is pretty clear. On the first day of spring, the sun pointer/phallus enters the bedrock mortar/vagina and another season of fertility is guaranteed.
