UPDATE - Looks like Desert Bill might have solved the mystery of what the sturdy table with the metal top is. Here's his comment, "That short leg table with the iron clad top was used for working on small engines, water pumps, etc. The reason for the short legs and iron top is for for sliding and turning heavy objects with ease that you can't turn or slide on wood. Also, the short height of the table is perfect for working on such machinery. I had one in my shop and the one in your photo looks just like it. The scratches and wear on the top looks like it has seen some use."
