Salt Springs was a prehistoric Indian camp long before it became a stop on the Santa Fe-Salt Lake Trail.  The lure here, of course, was water.  It was barely palatable, but in the desert it meant the difference between life and death.  We're heading toward the giant Athol tree grove in the background to cool off before resuming the hike.
