Here's a closer look.  These "chiseled square" style bench marks predate the use of the brass discs which began to be used in 1904.  These older style markers are from the late 1800's and, although rare, are most often found near old town sites constructed when the railroads were first built.  We have seen a similar one at the old site of Argos, which has also been razed.
