Within a few minutes, we cross the wilderness area boundary and intersect the old road which used to run out to the Iron Chief Mine. This road had a pipeline running along it that took water from a pumping plant at Cottonwood Spring and carried it eighteen miles to the Iron Chief Mine. The Iron Chief was located in 1892 and was a good gold producer until it closed in 1902. There was a spur line dropping down from Conejo Well to join the Iron Chief pipeline, so all we need to do is to follow the old road until we intersect with the Conejo Well road.
