We arrived at the village of Peach Springs on the day before the hike. As we drove slowly along old Route 66 we checked out the now closed Shell gas station that dates back to the 1920's. That might seem like a long time ago, but it was way back in 1775 when Francisco Garces visited this spot and called it Saint Basil's Wells. After Lt. Ned Beale's camel-mounted expedition in the early 1800's, the Mormon missionaries who followed him planted the peach trees near the springs which later led to the town's name.
