Bladderpod bushes are usually immune to insect infestations due to the toxic chemicals that they produce. Every now and then insects, such as the harlequin bug seen here, are able to quickly evolve enzymes to break down these compounds. This results in the plant evolving a new and more potent chemical and the arms race is on all over again!
