As we near the pavement at Hinkley we're awed by the huge wall of smoke that's rolling toward Barstow. Later we find that it's from a large fire in the hills above Hesperia. In fact, by the time we pass Hesperia on the freeway it's dark and the flames can easily be seen winding upward on the hillsides.
