This unusual flower is the immature blossom of the bladder-sage, otherwise known as the paper-bag bush. As the flower matures, the lower portion becomes inflated into a swollen pod. As the pod dries, it resembles a Chinese lantern. Desert ground squirrels rely on the seeds inside the papery pods as a source of food.
